Israel’s Election Puts Regional Security Policies Under Scrutiny
Regional governments must distinguish between the prospect of engaging with a less confrontational Israeli leader and the expectation that a new administration would resolve longstanding disputes over occupation, sovereignty and Palestinian rights.
The electoral landscape also suggests that any change in leadership may come with significant political constraints. A recent poll reportedly showed that neither Netanyahu’s bloc nor the opposition had secured enough support to govern independently. Coalition negotiations could therefore prove decisive in determining the next government’s direction.
In such circumstances, a prime minister’s ability to make concessions would depend partly on the positions of coalition partners and their willingness to maintain the government. An electoral victory over Netanyahu would not necessarily represent a public mandate for Palestinian statehood or a broader shift in policy toward the Palestinians.
Regional priorities also vary from one capital to another. Egypt and Jordan are focused on preventing the displacement of Palestinians and limiting further instability along their borders. Lebanon and Syria face concerns over national sovereignty and the conditions needed for reconstruction.
Saudi Arabia is seeking a lasting political settlement that can accommodate regional integration while addressing Palestinian rights. Türkiye, meanwhile, approaches developments through both the Palestinian issue and its security interests in Syria.
Although these governments share concerns about regional stability, their geographic positions, political interests and exposure to Israeli policies differ. Any assessment of the implications of Israel’s election must therefore consider not only who becomes prime minister, but also whether the incoming government is prepared to change the policies shaping relations with its neighbors.
