Pentagon Flags Israel as Top Spy Threat to U.S. Officials

(MENAFN) The Pentagon has quietly upgraded its counterintelligence threat rating for Israel to its highest possible tier, amid mounting alarm over what American officials describe as an increasingly aggressive Israeli espionage campaign targeting senior U.S. government figures, media reported Friday.

The Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) issued the elevated designation — raising Israel's threat classification to "critical" — within recent weeks, according to two current and one former U.S. official who spoke to the network.

At the heart of the assessment is a seven-page document cataloguing specific incidents that sharpened Washington's concerns, current officials told media. Intelligence analysts believe Israel is conducting targeted surveillance of senior U.S. officials in a calculated effort to penetrate the Trump administration's internal deliberations on Middle East policy.

The timing is significant. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have reportedly clashed in recent weeks over the Iran conflict and Israeli military operations in Lebanon — including what sources describe as a particularly tense call between the two leaders this past week. Israel, current and former officials say, is acutely focused on whether Trump opts to resume large-scale military operations against Iran or pivots toward a diplomatic resolution.

Emily Harding, vice president of the Defense and Security Department at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, offered a pointed assessment of Israel's intelligence posture.

"They are exceedingly interested in what we are up to," Harding said, having earlier described Israel as operating a "hyper-aggressive intelligence service."

The Israeli Embassy in Washington pushed back forcefully, flatly rejecting the reporting. The Pentagon declined to comment, and a White House official also dismissed the story.

The embassy said it is "completely false" that Israel conducts intelligence gathering on U.S. government officials.
