Iraq Prepares Virtual Arab League Meeting on Regional Security

(MENAFN) Iraq announced on Sunday that it is making preparations for a new virtual meeting of Arab League foreign ministers to address escalating security developments in the region, according to reports.

This upcoming session will be the second of its kind since the US and Israel launched their offensive on Iran on Feb. 28, followed by Tehran’s retaliatory strikes.

The previous virtual meeting, held on March 10, acted as an emergency session to address the immediate consequences of the conflict. It condemned Iranian attacks on neighboring countries and called for their immediate cessation.

Plans for the new meeting were revealed after Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein held separate phone calls with his Omani counterpart Badr Albusaidi and his Egyptian counterpart Badr Abdelatty. The Iraqi Foreign Ministry said that during discussions with Albusaidi, both sides highlighted “preparations for the upcoming virtual meeting of the Arab League foreign ministers," and emphasized "the importance of coordinating Arab positions and enhancing joint action in facing current challenges.”

In his conversation with Abdelatty, Hussein stressed that “the agenda of the meeting should include multiple issues, not be limited to a single topic, reflecting the magnitude of challenges facing the region,” the ministry added.

Regional tensions have continued to escalate since Feb. 28, when US and Israeli strikes on Iran began, prompting repeated Iranian drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military forces.
