US, UK Diplomats Discuss Iran, Regional Security
In a statement, officials said that Rubio and Cooper "underscored the importance of continued close coordination on the security of the broader Middle East."
The conversation comes amid tensions between Washington and London regarding the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran. President Donald Trump recently remarked that the US does not require British aircraft carriers in the region and criticized UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for initially declining to support US-led strikes, saying, "We don't need people that join wars after we've already won."
Following this, Downing Street approved limited use of British airbases for defensive purposes, and Royal Air Force jets have been deployed to intercept Iranian missiles and drones aimed at regional allies.
The regional conflict has escalated since US and Israeli forces carried out joint attacks on Iran on February 28, reportedly killing more than 1,200 people, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, over 150 schoolgirls, and senior military officials. Iran has responded with missile and drone strikes targeting Israeli cities and locations hosting US military assets, raising concerns about a wider Middle East confrontation.
