Syria Starts Receiving Applications for Raqqa Election Body
A Syrian news agency, citing a statement from the Higher Committee for the People’s Assembly Elections, reported that the call for applications targets the creation of election bodies in the Raqqa and Tabqa districts.
According to the statement, “the Raqqa electoral district will have 150 members on the electoral body to elect three members of parliament, while Tabqa district will have 50 members to elect one member.”
Raqqa governorate is divided into three electoral districts—Raqqa, Tabqa, and Tell Abyad—with representatives for Tell Abyad already chosen last October.
On Feb. 17, the Supreme Committee for People’s Assembly Elections “issued the final list of subcommittees for Raqqa and Tabqa districts.”
Earlier, in early October, Syria conducted an indirect election for its People’s Assembly, marking the first vote since the ouster of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Approximately 6,000 voters, drawn from electoral bodies nationwide, participated to elect two-thirds of the 210-seat legislature.
Under the country’s new transitional framework, 140 seats were contested via these indirect votes, while the president will appoint the remaining 70 members
