Canada Links Iran Ties to Regime Change

(MENAFN) Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand delivered a stark ultimatum Saturday, declaring that Ottawa will refuse diplomatic engagement with Tehran "unless there is regime change. Period."

"The repressive Iranian regime must curtail the consistent and illegal violation of Iranian human rights, including by respecting international law and international humanitarian law," Anand stated during an interview a newspaper in Germany, where she is participating in the Munich Security Conference.

Anand simultaneously unveiled fresh sanctions targeting seven individuals "linked to Iranian state bodies responsible for intimidation, violence and transnational repression targeting Iranian dissidents and human rights defenders."

Ottawa cut diplomatic ties with Tehran in 2012 during Prime Minister Stephen Harper's tenure, citing human rights violations. Since that rupture, Canada has maintained economic restrictions and trade barriers while pursuing international litigation over a passenger aircraft downing that killed Canadian nationals.

In parallel developments, the US has reinforced its Middle East military footprint by dispatching a second aircraft carrier battle group along with supplementary destroyers, combat aircraft and intelligence-gathering platforms to the region.

Anand emphasized that Ottawa's priority in the area centers on combating human rights abuses, though she refused to indicate whether Canada would back potential US military action against Iranian targets.
