Italian President Urges Arab Action for Gaza
He highlighted the importance of engaging Arab countries to help resolve the intensifying conflict.
Speaking during political discussions in Luxembourg, Mattarella stressed, "A quick reflection is needed, involving Arab countries, to find a solution that resolves the serious situation today."
The Italian leader reiterated the need for rapid de-escalation, insisting that "a ceasefire must be reached immediately and all hostages must be released by Hamas."
His remarks underscored the urgency of halting the violence and addressing the crisis through diplomatic channels.
At the same time, Italy witnessed notable political developments on the domestic front.
The Regional Council of Tuscany passed a resolution to halt all institutional cooperation with the Israeli government.
This move was based on what were described as "persistent and serious violations of international humanitarian law in the Gaza Strip," according to an Italian newspaper.
The proposal was introduced by the Democratic Party and received backing from Italia Viva, the 5 Star Movement, and Europa Verde.
It was approved with 24 votes in favor and seven opposed. Tuscany’s President Eugenio Giani acknowledged, "This motion has a predominantly symbolic value," but also noted its strong message advocating for the "recognition of the State of Palestine."
In addition to urging formal recognition of Palestine, the resolution calls on the Italian government to denounce the policies of Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu’s administration and to work toward halting economic and trade partnerships with Israel.
