UK Imposes Sanctions on Israeli Ministers

(MENAFN) This week, Britain chose to impose sanctions on two senior members of Israel's Cabinet in a bid "to uphold human rights and defend the prospect of a two-state solution," according to a statement by the prime minister on Wednesday.

The sanctions target Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich.

As part of the enforcement, both individuals will face restrictions on travel and have their financial assets frozen, as disclosed by the UK Foreign Office on Tuesday.

These actions were taken in coordination with international allies—Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Norway—against the two ministers "for inciting violence against Palestinians in the West Bank."

Premier Keir Starmer reiterated during his address to the House of Commons that the UK made this decision specifically "to uphold human rights and defend the prospect of a two-state solution."

During the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions session, Starmer also affirmed the government’s ongoing commitment to backing initiatives aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, the liberation of all hostages, and a significant expansion in the delivery of humanitarian support.

Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey voiced approval of the sanctions, highlighting the gravity of the situation.

He stated that the violent acts carried out by settlers, provoked by Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, against defenseless Palestinians in the West Bank are "intolerable."

Additionally, the prime minister conveyed deep concern about the humanitarian crisis unfolding in the Gaza Strip, describing the conditions as "dreadful and distressing."

He remarked that "scenes that we've witnessed outside aid distribution centers are frankly heartbreaking," stressing the urgent need for more aid to reach Gaza both in larger quantities and with greater urgency.
