Iraq Denies Concerns Regarding US Staff Evacuation

(MENAFN) A high-ranking Iraqi government representative confirmed on Wednesday that the United States' choice to withdraw some nonessential embassy staff from Baghdad is part of a wider diplomatic policy encompassing various nations in the Middle East.

The move, according to the official, does not stem from any particular security risk inside Iraq.

In a conversation with an Iraqi news agency, the official clarified: “This step is related to procedures concerning the US diplomatic presence in several Middle Eastern countries and is not specific to Iraq.”

This statement suggests that the action is consistent with regional adjustments rather than a response to Iraqi circumstances alone.

The official further stated that local security institutions have not detected any threats that would justify the withdrawal.

“All security assessments and briefings point to growing signs of internal stability and security,” the official noted, emphasizing that “all Arab and foreign diplomatic missions operating in Iraq continue to enjoy full safety, freedom of movement, and active engagement across the country—not just in the capital, Baghdad.”

A representative from the U.S. State Department also confirmed to Anadolu on Wednesday that certain embassy staff are being relocated from Baghdad.

The official explained, “President Trump is committed to keeping Americans safe, both at home and abroad. In keeping with that commitment, we are constantly assessing the appropriate personnel posture at all our embassies,” adding, “Based on our latest analysis, we decided to reduce our Mission in Iraq.”

At this stage, the scope of the evacuation remains uncertain, including whether all diplomatic personnel are affected.
