Iran praises Russia for targeting US bombing threat

(MENAFN) A senior Iranian lawmaker has expressed gratitude to Russia for standing against US threats related to Iran’s nuclear program. Abolfazl Zohrevand, a member of Iran's parliamentary Security and Foreign Policy Committee, told RT that Moscow’s condemnation of American rhetoric was a welcome move and cautioned that Washington might be setting a “propaganda trap” for Tehran.

The warning came amid ongoing indirect negotiations between Iran and the US in Oman, which began in April. US President Donald Trump recently warned Iran that refusal to reach a deal could lead to military strikes.

Zohrevand specifically praised Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova for her strong remarks criticizing Washington's stance. Zakharova had called threats to bomb Iranian nuclear sites “irresponsible” and warned of “catastrophic consequences” for the world, emphasizing that diplomacy is the only viable solution to address concerns over Iran’s nuclear activities.

Zohrevand advised Iran to remain cautious and not be misled by what he described as an unreliable narrative from the US.

Earlier this week, Trump posted on Truth Social that Russian President Vladimir Putin had offered to assist in resolving the nuclear issue through diplomatic engagement with Tehran. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Putin had expressed willingness to mediate, citing Russia’s strong ties with Iran.

On Monday, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated Iran’s readiness to provide assurances about the peaceful intent of its nuclear program. However, he dismissed US demands to halt uranium enrichment as unrealistic. Currently, Iran enriches uranium to 60%, well above the 3.67% limit outlined in the now-defunct 2015 nuclear agreement, which was abandoned by Trump during his first term, labeling it ineffective.
