European Commission demands suspension of EU-Israel association deal

(MENAFN) The European Commission on Tuesday officially registered a European Citizens’ Initiative demanding the full suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement due to alleged Israeli violations of international law.

The initiative’s organizers were represented by Malin Bjork, a former member of the European Parliament. In a statement, the Commission clarified that registration only confirms that the procedural requirements were met and does not validate the factual accuracy of the initiative’s claims. “The content of the initiative only expresses the views of the group of organizers and can in no way be taken to reflect the views of the Commission,” it added.

The organizers assert that Israel is responsible for an “unprecedented” number of civilian deaths and injuries, widespread displacement, and the systematic destruction of hospitals and medical facilities in Gaza. They also cited a blockade of humanitarian aid, which they argue could amount to the use of starvation as a method of war, claiming that Israel violates multiple international laws and fails to prevent genocide as mandated by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

“Yet the European Union has still not suspended its association agreement with Israel, which is the cornerstone of EU-Israel bilateral trade, economic and political cooperation,” the initiative statement said. The organizers emphasized that EU citizens “cannot tolerate” maintaining an agreement that, in their view, legitimizes and finances a state committing crimes against humanity and war crimes.
